Viewing: Pinocchio (Del Toro)

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

The latest film by director Guillermo Del Toro is his take on the classic tale of Pinocchio, told in stop motion animation with the accompaniment of musical numbers.

As expected from Del Toro, this film has a certain beautiful edge to it, each design has its merits and are creatively placed into this film which delve into Italy in WW2, the fact that life is so short and to cherish it and those around you, it mentions death and the meaning of love and fathers and family.

This film is beautifully told in such a new and creative way that really showcases the work of stop motion animators. The pacing however, felt a little off, though maybe it was just me that felt this way, it lacked SOMETHING that I feel could elevate the film a little more.

In some aspects, I believe the musical numbers took away from the overall feel of the film, it some songs didn't quite match the theme or the overall feel of the film, the darker, twisted quality it had.

But overall this film was beautifully made and I admire Del Toro's work and would recommend all watch this movie.
