Research

1960s timeline.jpg

During the 60s there was a lot of political unrest, there was the civil rights movement, the cuban missile crisis and the looming fear of the cold war, but there was more to it than that.

The 1960s saw a big movement in film, tv and music, the space race giving inspiration to space-like shows like Star Trek, Thunderbirds and Doctor Who. Music inspired fashion, such as the mod look, art inspired living and colours used in fabrics and wallpapers.

The 60s was a decade of transitioning between that of the war generation and the new modern one, where there was more time for leisure and freedom.

Ideas

Originally I had planned on creating a holiday space based on my talks with my grandad and the highlight on free time, leisure and disposable income.

However, my designs for a caravan were too small to create in a studio setting. (left)

I went back to my talk with my grandma and started designing her description of her living room as a child. (above)

Designing the Space

I investigated colours and patterns, items and furniture that could fit within the space. I put together a moodboard based on my research, identifying reoccurring colours and themes and experimented with mixing colours to create a palette that would suit the 1960s space alongside my grandma's descriptions.

  • Dado rail

  • Skirting & Cornice

  • Crittel windows

  • Textured wallpaper painted over

  • Anaglypta

  •

Using muddy browns and darker tones in the home would suit better for the characters. It would work well in contrast with the costumes in the scenes

A rough sketchup model based on my grandma's description of the room. I changed the removed wall after releasing it would not get the doors or interesting architectural features in camera. Not accurate to scale.

Technical drawing & Models

Using sketchup as a basis to get my measurements, alongside the dimensions from the rightmove website, I planned out the space in a technical drawing, adding textured wallpaper and tiles to the area.

From my technical drawing, I create my white card model, putting in the floating wall and removable roof piece to enable a camera to film a wide shot and various shots of different areas of the space.
