Lecture Activity - Timeline 1800-2000

Researching various and key events within the 20th Century, I found it interesting how certain events may have influenced art, cinema and fashion throughout this timeline.


Some key dates that I found interesting/important:


- 1905 The world's first nickelodeon opened showing a silent film called The Great Train Robbery

- 1900-1910 Fauvism art movement, colour became more important than the subject itself

- 1900-1910 George Melies

- 1930 Universal buys the right to Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' which was then released on screen in 1931, setting the scene for future horror films

- 1910s Cinema began to change, movie length changed from an average of 15 mins to longer

- 1911 Discovery of Machu Picchu, an Inca city, also known as 'The Lost city of the Incas', believed to be the home of the Inca emperor Pachacuti

- 1912 The Titanic sank

- 1914-1918 WW1

- 1920-1930 Men and Women's fashion began to blend together, the bob cut was seen as a sign of independence in women

- 1920s Peak age of Hollywood

- 1922 Tut's tomb was discovered

- 1923 Walt Disney company was founded

- 1928 Mickey mouse debuted

- 1928 Women allowed to vote in the UK

- 1929-1939 The Great Depression

- 1930 Betty Boop introduced

- 1939-1945 WW2

- 1950s Golden age of Musicals

- 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon

- 1962 Cuban Missile crisis

- 1963 Doctor Who released

- 1973 Abortion legalised

- 1979 First female Prime minister, Margaret Thatcher


- 1860s-1900s Impressionism

- 1905-1910 Fauvism

- 1907 Cubism

- 1910s Futurism

- 1950 Pop art

- 1960-1970s Minimalism

- Surrealism

- Expressionism
