BB3 Project - Building / Experimenting Final model

Creating the title for the back of my performance area was a challenge, I wanted to create a look that replicated neon.

I experimented using various techniques to try and work out what was best.

  1. Printed font text, highlighted with white acrylic pen - Too small, font doesn't suit neon

  2. Sharpie pen outline, painted inside letters - Too messy, requires a neater font and cleaner brushline?

  3. Paintbrush, no lines - Again, too messy, doesn't give the impression of neon

  4. Glue gun written in letters and then painted - Would be better if neater, good to hold onto for future ideas/projects?

  5. Printed out text from a neon font generator - Simple, but effective

  6. Printed out text from a neon font generator again - Cut closer to text to give it a smoother look, works better.

Something doesn't need to be complicated to work on the model, as lost as it expresses what you are trying to archive and show.

Door - Foam board, painted. Using Skills passport lessons in model making helped me create the door on my tree, creating a frame and the door that could fit inside it, wedging masking tape around it to create a hinge.

Dinosaur Table - A painted toy miniature of a Triceratops, coated in pva to give it a shiny finish and topped with a round piece of acetate paper to mimic a glass tabletop. With the legs intact the table was too high, so they were trimmed down so the table would be equal to or shorter than the sofas.

Flooring - Foam board, realised this was easier than using card and sticking each part individually, also measures correctly to a tread. The Performance area was made using a wooden textured foam-board, painted darker to match alongside the roots and tree. The discussion area has shiny black card to mimic refectory floors.

Tree - Made from toilet roll (as seen in sketch models) but painted and warped as for it to look more tree like. Also used branches from pre-existing model trees to create the branches, as well as the climbing plant on the discussion area

Roots - Shredded card, painted

Sofas - Foam board, as suggested by a member of my group, as this will help bulk out the furniture, then painted.

Bookshelf - Foam board, card (for shelves) and printouts of books and statues glued onto mount board and stuck down.
