In workshop we were shown how to use a soldering iron, cutting down copper wire and shaping them with pliers and then finally soldering them together using soldering wire, melting it onto the copper to join them together.
- Goggles to be worn at all times
- Have open air circulation for the fumes or wear a mask
- Both the soldering iron and the copper wire will get hot once heated, don't touch with bare hands
- When soldering, hold the iron like a pen, resting your hand against the surface to keep steady
- When cutting the long strips of copper wire, hold the wire under your arm and the half you're cutting in your hand, then cut in the place you want
- When cutting the wire, cut it from near the bottom of the cutters
- Think about how you will weld something together before doing it, otherwise it could prove difficult
- Soldering iron tips may need cleaning between uses, use the sponges to rub away any access solder, you can also use sanding paper to clean the ends of COOLED irons
